Marlice

A Life in the Wild

“Harnas” in Afrikaans means sanctuary. This is what Marlice van Vuuren offers at her “Harnas Lodge” in Namibia. Here wounded, rejected or sick animals find a refuge and care. The story of Harnas begins 30 years ago just after Marlice was born.

The film depicts the unusual childhood of Marlice, the different stages of her youth as well as her life today and shows her relationship to the real outside world, touching on the politics of conservation and social structures. The film shows both the apparently idyllic success story of Harnas, the financial problems and sacrifices which lay behind its development, but also the way Marlice makes the break-through to success. No easy task for a woman - especially in Africa.
